No Ubuntu 9.10, sudo apt-get install python-webkitgtk não rola. Ao invés disso, use sudo apt-get install python-webkit.

Olá, A ultima versão git do gmate agora tem uma configuração do Smart Indent, onde podem ser configurados os spacos e tabs por linguagem, inclusive alterar as expressões regulares do smart indent para adicionar/alterar o comportamento.

e quanto a fonte monaco, da uma conferida aqui que da de dar uma melhorada nela:
